My wife and I made a pie on Saturday.
I have been wanting to experiment with piemaking for several weeks now (how things like this get into my head I'll never know without surgical exploration)and this weekend was the most opportune time. We went apple picking a few days ago and had a slew to choose from. I also had sort of a general overall idea in my head regarding the recipe. Not knowing exactlying what I was doing, I jumped in. The Mrs. helped me a lot, what with making the crust and instructing me on when and how to mix dry items with solids. My personal innovation was the creative use of a cheese grater to make the apple filling.
Upon leaving the oven, I can say with honesty and no small bit of pride that the experiment was a success. Maybe not bake-off level (yet), but damn tasty. Took half to my brother in-law who loves apple pie. He begrudgingly admitted it was good, his youngest daughter gobbled up her share, the older one liked it and my sister in-law caught the aftertaste 'surprise' I was going for. A few tweaks and this will be ready to go on the road...
But Monday reared its ugly head, and brought exams and heartburn. Bubba's been a bit withdrawn in class, and although I appreciate people are trying to help some say that old chestnut about "maybe he has ADD". I'm not a professional yet, but Bubba's got ADD like I've got ADD. When I was 4 they told my mother I was possibly brain-damaged. At 9 they tested me at a reading level of 2 years of college and declared me a genius. I think I'll let some more time pass before making any false starts in the judgement department.
Crazy Lady's birthday is on Friday; one week after mine. Still don't know what to get her that the staff at the V.A. won't try to throw out or steal. Only thing I can think of is food, and how often can you give that as a gift?
But at least Halloween's right around the corner.
